Good eyesight is very important in school children because it affects how they learn and perform in school and at play. When their vision suffers, so will their education and sports participation.
Long ultraviolet (UV) exposure, both from natural sources like the sunlight or artificial forms, such as from tanning beds, can harm the eyes and the vision in various ways. Some of the conditions include photokeratitis or the swelling of the cornea, cataract, macular degeneration and, rarely, ocular melanoma.
Measles causes 60,000 cases of blindness in the world yearly. The contagious virus is prevalent in East Africa and Asia, and new cases are still emerging in Europe and in the United States. Lack of vaccination and poor nutrition are linked to the increased rate of blindness in affected nations.
