Is It True That Blue Eyes Are More Sensitive to Sunlight?

You probably already know that not all eyes are created equal. But did you know that light-colored eyes are more sensitive to sunlight and are, therefore, more susceptible to ultraviolet (UV) damage? That’s right. Blue, hazel and green eyes are at a higher risk of eye diseases that are associated with too much exposure to the sun.

Why Eye Color Matters

Light-colored eyes have less pigment to protect against the sun and UV radiation. This is also why people with light-colored skin are more sensitive to UV damage. If you have light-colored eyes, overexposure to harmful UV light can have catastrophic and irreversible effects on your eyes, and can lead to conditions, such as macular degeneration and cataracts.

How To Protect Your Eyes

People with light-colored eyes should be more careful in guarding against the sun. If you have blue, hazel or green eyes, your eye doctors will most likely recommend that you wear sunglasses with 100% UV radiation protection year-round, even in cloudy or overcast weather.

They might also suggest that you minimize time spent under the sun. In cases where sun exposure is inevitable, it is recommended that you wear wraparound frames and a cap with a wide brim to shade your eyes.
