4 Basic Qualities Of A Good LASIK Candidate

At Northern Virginia Doctors of Optometry, we proudly offer an array of effective vision correction methods to help you achieve better visual health. Apart from our high-quality eyeglasses and contact lenses, we have partnered with TLC Laser Eye Centers® to provide reliable LASIK co-management services. Our pre-operative eye care procedure involves performing an assessment to determine if you are qualified to undergo this option. Here are four basic qualities you should have:

Appropriate Age

Presently, there are no types of laser approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to be used for individuals younger than 18 years old. We may suggest using other vision correction options, such as contact lenses or eyeglasses, if you are not yet of legal age.

Stable Eye Health

Before undergoing LASIK eye surgery, it is a must that your eyes are in stable condition. We may perform a comprehensive eye exam to check for any active eye infections, discharges, or recurring irritations. We may also assess if you have any eye injuries, severe corneal irregularities, or underlying eye diseases, like glaucoma or cataracts. It is important as well that your visual acuity has not changed for the past year.

Good General Health

Apart from your eye health, we will also assess your overall well-being. This plays a major factor in the procedure’s success and your recovery period. Any pre-existing illnesses, especially if they are uncontrolled, may result in your compromised immune system. This may impair your ability to heal completely and properly.

Adequate Corneal Thickness

LASIK involves making a flap on your corneal surface. We may pull this back and modify the underlying tissues, reshaping your cornea to improve your vision. This is why it’s necessary that your cornea has a thickness of at least 0.55 mm. Otherwise, this may result in failure to create a corneal flap, resulting in unsuccessful surgery.

The best way to know if you are a good candidate for LASIK is to have your eyes personally assessed by our expert optometrist. Call us today at one of our four locations or complete our form to schedule an appointment. We serve patients in Alexandria, Crystal City, Falls Church and Reston.
